Chapter Eleven

I woke to the smell of pancakes. Missy brought up a tray with a huge travel mug of coffee. My head ached but I’d slept like the dead.

“How are you?” Greg asked.

I poured extra syrup on my pancakes and cut them all at once like when you’re a child.

“The food will help.” I stabbed some dripping pieces then savored the first bite.

“You look like crap. Stay in bed today. I’m going to rustle up a couple of monks I know who’ve done exorcisms before. We’ll need the reinforcements.” Greg checked his phone.

“The other one went okay? Did you follow up with the Redden family?” I asked.

“Don’t worry, all clear so far. I’ll check monthly until they’ve had six months without incident. That should be it. But when you’re done with this case, you can walk the house and be sure.” Greg hit more buttons on his phone. “Now rest. Don’t stress about anything. Last night was harder than you think.”

“I was there. Don’t baby me.” I took another big bite.

“Look at the pic I just sent you,” he said.

I grabbed my phone from the nightstand and groaned. My muscles ached but that was nothing new on a rough case.

There was a text from unknown: Sell me your soul and you’ll be happy...forever

I deleted the message and blocked the number, but I knew there was no point to it. Demons could manipulate energy. I shook off the beginner stalker threats.

Checking my real messages, Greg had sent a dozen pics. The first few were hands with scratches. Then it was two shirtless men, one had three scratch marks down his back. The other had been wearing a cross. It left a blistered burn on his chest.

“These aren’t you. Steve?” I asked.

“Steve has the scratches. The other guy with you had the cross on. They didn’t feel the pain until you were out of the house. Toby sent me pictures this morning.”

“I’m glad you made friends,” I said.

“Don’t be snarky. We need to check you.” Greg was already staring at my arms.

I took along gulp of coffee then slid out of bed. I hadn’t bothered removing my bra last night and yanked a short nightshirt over my underwear.

Pulling off the nightshirt, I ignored Greg’s raised eyebrow. I faced the floor length mirror and turned. Nothing pink jumped out at me.

“Anything?” I asked.

“I don’t see anything.” he stood behind me and pushed my hair to one side.

I lifted my hair into a ponytail. “My body aches but nothing hurts like a burn or scratch.”

His finger touched right below the back of my neck. “This is a dull pink. Very small.”

“Take a picture. I don’t have a birthmark back there,” I said.

He snapped a picture with his cell phone. “Looks like a Halloween cat but really small. Did you get a tattoo?”

I laughed. “No. Why would I ever get one where I can’t see it. Let me see.”

Ivy walked by and stared. “You scold me for flirting with men at John’s engagement party and I find this?”

“The guys last night got scratched up pretty bad.
