Chapter Ten

Two months later...

From the living room of her second-story apartment Mia watched a teenaged couple walk hand in hand down 1st Street in Sweetheart. A moment ago she’d dialed Will’s number and now the phone was ringing and her stomach was full of butterflies. She could see the girl’s face as she looked up at her boyfriend—excited, giggly, alive. That was exactly how she felt. Please pick up, Will...

“Mia,” he finally said in his deep voice, slightly out of breath. “Hang on, I’m in the middle of fixing the tire on the tractor.” There was a clatter of tools in the background and then he said, “What’s up?”

“Guess what?” she said, grinning. She wished they were on Skype and she could see his face but she could picture him, his blond hair dented by his cowboy hat and the knees of his jeans dusty from kneeling on the ground.

“You won the lottery? That’s what you sound like.” There was amusement in his tone and metal clanking noises, as if he was putting tools away.

“I got the job at your friends’ vineyard,” she said triumphantly.

“Awesome!” Will said. “Does that mean you’re going to live here?”

“I rented an apartment above the Beauty Spot on 1st Street,” she said. “It’s right across from City Hall.”

“I know the salon,” Will said. “Emma’s sister Zoe owns it.”

“There’s a little park and a playground half a block away. Laney is on the next street. The apartment is furnished, too.” Mia turned to survey the plain but comfortable furniture. “It’s not going to make the cover of House Beautiful but it’ll do just fine until I can save enough money for a deposit on a home of my own.”

“Congratulations,” Will said. “When do you take possession? Do you need a hand moving?”

“I’m here now. I hired a moving truck in Billings.” With the last of her dwindling savings. She’d figured Will would help if she asked but she’d already imposed on him enough. She wanted to spend time with him because she enjoyed his company, not for what he could do for her. “I drove up last week for the job interview and checked out rental accommodation then. Everything’s happened so fast, I can hardly believe it.”

“Good for you.” Approval warmed Will’s voice. “When do you start work?”

“Next week. Three days a week and probably more hours come June when tourist season is in full swing. Stewart and Kristin are so nice, I know I’m going to love working there. I told them about my uncle’s vineyard and trattoria in Umbria and now they want to install a wood-fired pizza oven.” She paused for breath. “So the reason I’m calling...”

“You don’t need a reason,” Will said.

But she did. When she kissed him goodbye at the christening she’d felt her whole being surge to life at the touch of his lips. She’d sensed his attraction to her but also his wariness. The smart thing would be to keep her distance. She had a child now. Changing their relationship from friendly to romantic would be just plain dumb.
