Lex drove back to Sweet Briar, replaying the kiss in his mind. He’d been surprised when Joni kissed him. It would have been wiser for him to have let the moment end there. But no, he’d given in to his passion. Luckily he’d gotten control of himself before things got out of hand. Still, he had to do better in the future. He couldn’t take any more unnecessary risks.

He was still furious with himself for damaging their relationship. For a while it had looked like the rift would be permanent. Thanks to the baby she was carrying, they would always have a connection. Not that he would use the baby to stay close to Joni. He loved this baby for him- or herself. Still, the baby made it essential for him and Joni to get along. And it gave him hope that with enough time they could become close again.

When they reached her block, he pulled into her driveway. He’d never considered anything wrong with her garage apartment, but now he thought it was too small for her and a child. Eventually she was going to have to move. He’d grown up with plenty of space, so he couldn’t imagine any less for his child. His house, though not ostentatious, had four bedrooms and three baths and sat on an acre of land. There was more than enough room for their child to run and play.

Maybe he could convince Joni to move in with him. As soon as the idea popped into his mind, he dismissed it. Joni wasn’t going to agree to that. She was independent and quite capable of purchasing a house of her own if she wanted one. Although she didn’t make a huge salary, he knew Brandon didn’t charge her much rent. In fact, that had been a bone of contention between brother and sister. She’d wanted to pay rent, but since she helped at the restaurant without taking a salary, he’d refused to take her money. They’d finally agreed on a token amount. Even though she often purchased items for kids at the youth center, she’d been able to save a majority of the money she’d earned over the past years. And if she didn’t have enough money to buy the house she wanted, Lex would make up the difference. He had no intention of being a deadbeat dad. He’d make sure Joni and his child had whatever they wanted.

Joni had fallen asleep on the ride, and he took a moment to look at her before he woke her up. She really was beautiful. Her face and body were perfection. Not that her looks were the most important qualities or even her most attractive. She possessed a pure spirit. The kindness and sweetness she showed to one and all could never be matched, even by high cheekbones, full lips and clear brown eyes.

Joni sighed, and Lex shook himself out of his stupor. He could look at her for hours on end and never get tired, but he knew he wasn’t doing her any favors by letting her sleep sitting up.
