CHAPTER TEN

HOMECOMING

‘It’s cool to come home. We wouldn’t be anywhere without our Sydney fans, or our Australian fans. Those 12 people who were at the first show we played – they’re the reason we’re here now.’

LUKE HEMMINGS, AUSTRALIAN DAILY TELEGRAPH

The boys announced they would be playing a very special homecoming gig at the Oxford Art Factory in Sydney on 21 May 2013, shortly after their return to Australia. The venue held an important place in the boys’ hearts, being one of the first hometown venues they’d played at after fully committing to the band and taking 5SOS out on the road. They saw it as a sincere thank you to their first local supporters – it would undoubtedly be something of a relief playing to a relatively small crowd of 500 friendly faces, rather than the tens of thousands of baying fans they had been facing every night on the One Direction arena tour.

As if the Art Factory show wasn’t enough, within hours of touching down, the boys revealed they would be taking to the road in June for a series of Australian headline dates, cheekily going under the name of the Pants Down Tour. They wrote on their Facebook page: ‘So excited to finally be home … we missed you guys heaps … and we really want to see as many of you as we can while we are here. So we have some epic news!! We are doing an Australian tour starting next week … It’s gonna be bad ass.’ Clearly, the boys did not mean to waste a moment of the break from their Take Me Home duties, and they intended to give their Australian fans a sneak peak of what to expect from their set when the 1D tour eventually rolled into their hometowns in a few months’ time.

The sold-out Oxford Art Factory gig was a real highlight for the 5SOS lads. Their hardcore Australian fans had waited a long time to see them again – it was almost a full year since their last solo show on their home turf – and the band were determined to prove their patience hadn’t been in vain. Ashton was particularly keen to get back on stage and show everyone what they’d been missing, posting a couple of days before the start of the Pants Down tour, ‘At home and extremely bored tonight, makes me realize the only thing I’m good at is being on a stage performing for you guys.’ The band knew that in this relatively relaxed setting they had the chance to show off some of the new material they had been working so hard to complete, as well as letting everyone see their improved skills as musicians and performers. It would seem no one was disappointed by the performance they gave that night and it proved to be the homecoming the boys had dreamed of during their time away from Sydney.

Eager to keep up the momentum, the boys uploaded ‘Try Hard’ on 1 June 2013, premiering the video they’d filmed in the UK at the Blackpool Pleasure Beach the previous month.
