On December 14, 1977, LAPD had questioned Rodney Alcala as a suspect in the disappearance of Ellen Hover in New York City. Two days later, on December 16, LA County Sheriff’s Department received a call that twenty-seven-year-old cardiac-case nurse Georgina Wixted had not shown up for work and was not answering her phone.

Georgina Wixted was found raped and murdered in her apartment in Malibu in 1977.

When police entered Apartment 4 on the ground floor of the Malibu Surf Apartments at 22648 Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, they discovered Wixted’s nude body covered in bruises, lacerations and blood on the floor of her bedroom. She had been posed with her legs spread open outward toward the door with a pair of pantyhose tightly knotted around her throat. A bloodied claw hammer lay near the body. Bloody bedding, blood-soaked pillows, and a bloody nightgown were tossed near her on the floor, and the mattress was soaked in blood. The toilet, the bathroom sink, the soap and towels were all covered in blood. The autopsy documented a similar pattern of injuries similar to Lambson a month earlier. There were massive facial and skull fractures from hammer blows, lacerations to the genitals. Injuries to her vagina also indicated that an object had been forced into her. Her arm had been dislocated and fractured. Almost all the wounds had been inflicted while she was still alive. Seminal fluids were found in the mouth, anus and vagina, which is also infrequent in these types of cases. Many sexual serial killers are unable to ejaculate at the scene of their rape-murder until they leave the scene, often taking either pictures or video or totem souvenirs to which they later repeatedly masturbate to ejaculation as they recall what they had done. Only a particularly vicious, confident and experienced serial killer can be comfortable enough to ejaculate while raping and murdering his victim at a crime scene. The kind of serial killer who a day earlier had been questioned by police in the murder of another woman and had the arrogance to tell them that indeed he had been in the company of that woman on the day of her disappearance but had nothing to do with her death.

The night before, Georgina had been at Brennan’s Pub in Marina Del Rey with a female friend, who Georgina dropped off afterwards in Santa Monica before heading presumably toward her apartment in Malibu. It is conceivable that she had been seen by her killer in the pub and followed home. Twenty-six years later, on June 5, 2003, after a DNA match, Rodney Alcala would be charged in her rape-murder.

On March 22, 1978, the Hillside Strangler Task Force called on Alcala at his mother’s house in Monterey Park to question him as a possible suspect in the series of slayings. Alcala was able to provide satisfactory alibis for his whereabouts during the murders, but the investigators saw some marijuana in the house and Alcala was charged and jailed for about a month on a minor possession charge.
