Valentin

Moscow, Russia

13:11 (Local Time)

Valentin Morozov kept waiting for the slightest bit of guilt to hit him. Perhaps a touch of regret about what he had done, or a little bit of shame for his actions. But over one month on from murdering the girl that he used to see on his train every morning, he still felt nothing but pride.

That, and a deep urge to take somebody else’s life soon.

It was slightly irritating then that his life in London had been interrupted by a phone call twenty-four hours earlier, informing him that his mother and father had been killed in a car accident in Russia and that he was to fly in immediately to handle their affairs.

It wasn’t that Valentin was deeply affected by the loss of his parents. He hadn’t seen them since he was sixteen, when he had left their hopeless village in the north of Russia behind to seek his fortune somewhere with better prospects. That was fourteen years ago and after earning a good living first in Murmansk and eventually overseas in London, he had never felt the need or desire to return home and visit things that would only remind him so much of his poverty-stricken youth. Nor was he particularly interested when his parents’ lawyer had contacted him and requested a face-to-face meeting in his office in Moscow, rather than discussing the details of what his guardians may have left him in their wills over the phone.

He would admit to being intrigued by the fact that his parents actually had a lawyer, which was something he hadn’t known about or ever expected them to be able to afford. But even learning this fact had done little to warrant him having to board a plane in the UK and fly all the way across Europe for a meeting that almost certainly didn’t require such a trip. If they had left anything to Valentin, then it surely wouldn’t amount to much. It was probably less than the cost of his plane ticket over from London.

But the lawyer had been insistent and said that what they needed to discuss had to be done in person and so here he was, in the Russian capital, making his way through the city’s famous Red Square, on his way to the appointment with the lawyer who represented his deceased mother and father.

He passed the tourists who were gathered in the square to take photos of the many historic buildings within its perimeter and pressed on, irritable from both the long flight yesterday and the fact that he faced the same return journey later this evening. He was expected back in the offices of Global Sphere Investments in London’s affluent and influential Canary Wharf district tomorrow and although he could have taken annual leave and enjoyed a few more days in his homeland, he had simply chosen not to do so.

In his line of work, which involved handling the investment portfolios of multiple wealthy clients, taking time off was a last
