Ronnie Larkhall continued to stare at the various members of the jury, who were here to decide his fate, with so much tenacity that it was as if he was participating in a game of âwho will blink first.â But this was no game. Ronnie was making such intense eye contact with the jurors simply because he was looking to intimidate them and let them know that there would be problems for them should they decide that he and his colleague, Bulldog, were guilty of the charges laid against them.
The formidable gangster had even just made a âcut-throatâ sign to one of the jurors, a fairly attractive woman in her late thirties, and he knew she had seen it because she had now gone very pale and looked as if she had just seen a ghost. But nobody else had seen it, so Ronnie hadnât been admonished by the judge or the prosecution, which was good because he wanted to be able to do it several times throughout this case so that the jurors were left in no doubt about what course of action they should take when they retired to make their verdicts.
Ronnie knew he was going to get some kind of prison sentence at the end of this trial; there was simply too much evidence against him because his rat of a nephew, Damian, had seen to that. But he was experienced enough to know that there were certain things that he could do to ensure that the sentence was as lenient as possible, and one of those ways was to intimidate the people making the decision. Ronnie had once managed to turn what would have surely been a five-year stretch behind bars into an eighteen-month one in his past simply by stating a simple fact while he had been on the stand in court, which was that he had a very large organisation of dangerous employees, and they would be very disappointed if their boss was not free within two years.
The implication had been clear for both judge and jury:
Give me a lesser sentence, or those employees might just be paying you a visit.
Now, Ronnie was up to his old tricks again, but he knew that he was going to have to do a lot more than just make some stern eye contact and a few threatening gestures with his hands. The charges against him now were so serious that they threatened to see him spend the rest of his life behind bars, so he was going to have to take more extreme measures if he was going to avoid the worst fate for a criminal like him.
He was going to have to demonstrate how easily he could get to the jurors on the outside world.
In order to do that, Ronnie had already seen to it that each member of the jury would be followed home after court adjourned this afternoon by one of his men. Those men would then learn where each juror lived, as
