Paula Walsh could see the lights from the aeroplane flying over her house as she stood by the bedroom window and looked out, allowing herself to wonder for a moment about where those people on that flight might be going.
Somewhere warm and exotic, hopefully, where there were lots of beaches, swimming pools and tall drinks with little straw hats.
No doubt those people taking the flight were in need of a break and were escaping the harsh British winter to give themselves a gentler start to the New Year. But that was all the wondering Paula did before she looked down from the heavens and went back to focusing on the street outside this house. That was the main reason she was standing at this window now, peeping out between the closed curtains.
She was looking out over the street because she wanted to be sure of one thing.
That he wasnât coming back again.
It had been a week since Paula had accepted Valentin Morozovâs offer of an eye-watering amount of money in exchange for her sparing his life. In that time, a couple of things had happened. One, she had watched Valentin get on a private jet bound for Russia, and he had vowed never to come back. Two, she had quit her position as a detective with the Metropolitan Police with immediate effect, citing a need to spend more time with her family. And three, she had gone about improving relations with said family, working to repair the damage done between herself and her husband after they had become estranged, while also trying to see her daughter a lot more now that she wasnât working all the hours under the sun.
It had been for her family that Paula had almost killed Valentin, but it had also been for her family that she had accepted the offer of the life-changing amount of money and let him go free. While she knew it had been risky to let the killer go, she also knew that killing him wouldnât necessarily have made her personal life any better. If he had ended up in that grave that she had dug for him in the woods then not only would she have had a guilty conscience to live with and been in fear of getting caught for her crime, but she would have still been stuck in the situation where her demanding job kept her away from her loved ones.
That job was the reason her marriage had fallen apart, and she was seeing her child a lot less than she wanted to, so would killing Valentin have changed any of that?
She didnât think it would, but the offer of his money certainly promised to. With the funds he had suggested to her, she knew that she could leave the police and never have to work again. Not only that, but she could ensure that her daughter really did have the best start in life.
Money for anything that she needed.
University fees. A car. Travel.
Whatever she wanted, Paula would have then been in a position to give it.
