Melanie

20:09

Melanie Greeves wasn’t here for fireworks or bonfires or a snack from the food stalls. She was only here for one reason.

Her boyfriend, Jamal.

It had been his idea to come here and they had spoken about the night for many months beforehand. Jamal had displayed a passion for Bonfire Night that Melanie had never seen before, but then Jamal was the most passionate man she had ever met. He reminded her of being a child, when everything seemed possible and dreaming big was accepted instead of ridiculed.

His passion had rubbed off on her during their three-year relationship, to the point where Melanie felt like a completely different woman to the one she used to be. She had been sleep-walking through the first twenty years of her life, but Jamal had woken her up and the last three years had been the best she had ever experienced. She knew what it meant to be in love now: real, deep love, which only those who have ever known it can understand. Melanie watched as the girl was consoled by her parents before they turned and walked into the crowd, and she kept her eyes on them until they completely disappeared amongst the mass of people. Only then did Melanie start walking again, not with any particular destination in mind, but because she preferred to keep moving rather than staying in one spot.

Checking her watch, Melanie saw that she still had some time to kill before the firework display, so she decided to make another lap of the bonfire, sticking to the outer edges of the crowd so she could make her way around more easily. There were a lot more people here than she had anticipated but it wasn’t a problem. In fact, it made things easier for her. All the worries she had had before tonight seemed pointless now that she was actually here.

Nobody was looking at her.

Nobody noticed her.

Nobody cared about what she had under her coat.

Walking over the frost-hardened ground, Melanie thought again about the one man in this crowd who did care about her. Jamal was here with her too somewhere, although they had agreed to arrive separately and avoid each other once inside. But the thought of him being
