CIARA LET GO OF LIAM’S hand the moment Estella’s house morphed into view. The cool winter air bit at her skin, but it didn’t bother her as much as it should have. She felt cold with or without the weather’s effect.

The house and the back garden brought back memories of different days. None of those memories included Liam, and being at the house with him didn’t feel right.

But Ciara was happy to have him by her side. Even with her worries about him being there, his presence also brought her a sense of ease.

Liam exhaled loud enough for Ciara to hear. “Plenty of memories from here, I bet.”

Ciara hummed. “Yeah.”

“Let’s hope they won’t be tainted.”

Despite looking at the house, Ciara sensed Liam’s eyes on her. She desperately wanted to look back at him, but focusing on the task was more important. Finding Josh was all that mattered. She couldn’t let anything distract her.

“Are you ready?”

“No.” Ciara shuddered. “But waiting around isn’t going to help us find Josh.” She stepped forward, only for her path to be blocked. Liam had stepped in front of her, his hands already moving up her arms.

As his palms pressed against her arms, they radiated warmth, yet an icy coldness persisted inside her.“I can go. Alone,” Liam said.

Ciara raised her gaze and locked eyes with him. “No. I have to do this. I asked him to help and—”

“Don’t blame yourself. There’s nothing you could’ve done differently.”

Ciara nodded, but they both knew she hadn’t taken Liam’s words to the heart. “Let’s find Josh.”

The obvious place was Estella’s house. Still, Josh could be anywhere—or his body if Theresa had killed him.

Ciara refused to believe it. She couldn’t. Josh had been her colleague since the start of her career. He was one of the few she had remained close with through everything.

She had always been prepared to lose any of her colleagues. Death came with the job and it came without a warning. She had to be prepared. Every hit witch or hit wizard had to keep a distance from their colleagues, knowing one day they would certainly lose some of them. But even thinking of Josh’s death made Ciara’s head spin.

He couldn’t be dead.

Ciara walked ahead, leading the way. She headed for the backdoor, the hinges creaking as she pushed it open, and walked in with Liam.

It was evening, so there was hardly any light coming in through the windows. Ciara reached for the light-switch, afraid of what she would see with the lights on.

When she turned the lights on, she flinched. For nothing. There was nothing out of the ordinary. No bodies, no blood. Just the regular furniture there always had been.

But it didn’t ease her mind; they still had to check the other rooms downstairs and all the rooms upstairs.

“At least this time we get to search a house with the lights on.” Liam lowered his voice to a hushed whisper, even though they were likely alone in the house.

The memory of their previous house search flooded Ciara’s mind.
