Chapter Sixteen

As rain fell outside and a strong breeze blew through the night air, the pub's sign squeaked loudly.

Flat on her back in her bed, Caroline stared up at the ceiling and tried to determine exactly what she was going to do the following morning. She'd originally intended to go straight out to the house – or rather, to the ruins of the house – after arriving in Cobblefield, but somehow she'd ended up pottering about during the day and busying herself with one thing or another, and in the end she'd made the decision to delay her trip to Hadlow House until the next day. Now she was struggling to sleep, and she was starting to think that she'd made a mistake. If only she'd gone out to the house as planned, she might have already seen by now that there was nothing there.

But then she might have found Lily...

Back in Crowford, Caroline had told Josephine that she had to make the journey alone because nobody else would be able to deal with the situation. That had been partly true, but in reality she'd been hiding the full truth from everyone, even from herself. Now, in the dead of night, she understood exactly why she had to find Lily and face her alone.

In her mind's eye, she saw her hand on the pistol as Elsa Potter's head exploded, and then she saw her hand – the same hand – on the brick as Albert's skull cracked open. In that moment she knew, deep down, that most likely she was going to do the exact same thing with Lily, to finally end the horror that had plagued the Demeter family for so many years. She'd researched Hadlow House as much as possible and she knew a little about the ghostly Fanny Baxter, and she felt sure that there was only one way to free Lily from her waking nightmare. And if that was going to happen, she wanted as few witnesses as possible.

A moment later, hearing a creaking sound out on the landing, she turned and looked at the door.
