Chapter Sixteen

In the darkness of Hadlow House's cellar, a fly struggled in vain to escape from a spider's web. The owner of that web, meanwhile, was slowly advancing along the threads, preparing for the moment when it might strike.

Suddenly footsteps trampled across the ground just beyond the hatch. The spider pulled back into the shadows as the fly continued to struggle. A moment later a human shape appeared and moved toward the hatch's doors. Had anyone been on the other side of those doors, they would have just been able to make out a horrified human eye staring out at the garden and watching as Peter Cotton walked away. After a few more seconds, that wide-open and bloodied eye blinked.
