ON SEPTEMBER 6, 2013, FORTY-NINE YEAR OLD DEBRA MILKE, her once-brown hair now gray, walked out of the Perryville state prison complex in Goodyear, Arizona where she had spent 23 years on death row. She hugged her terminally ill mother for the first time in decades.

Six months earlier, a court of appeals had thrown out her conviction, saying she did not receive a fair trial. One investigator called her case “the most disgraceful police work I’ve ever seen.”

In January, 2014, a judge denied a motion to dismiss the murder charge against her. Milke’s future remains uncertain while prosecutors plan to re-try her in 2015.

Her ex-husband, Arizona Milke, has no doubt that she arranged to have Christopher killed. But he also thinks she'll be acquitted at the next trial. Prosecutors are again seeking the death penalty but he doesn’t want to see her executed."Christopher came out of her -- I don't want to see her killed," he said.

Milke’s friends and supporters, both in the U.S. and in her native Germany, bought a house for her to live in while she awaits her re-trial.

For both Bill Macumber and Debra Milke, the so-called confessions that first imprisoned them have now freed them.

Milke is free—for now—because of a confession she says she never made to a detective with a history of police misconduct.

Bill Macumber’s so-called confession to his wife is, along with lack of forensic evidence, one reason Arizona released him.

Some people still believe Bill Macumber and Debra Milke are guilty of their crimes.

They are free—but may or may not be innocent.
