Spontaneous Recycling

ON NEW YEAR’S Day, we were still in Florida on that same family vacation, and I woke up early to get some much-needed personal time. I started by taking a walk to the clubhouse at my in-laws’ subdivision.

After a little while, I passed two women and asked them if I was headed in the right direction. Although they were walking the opposite direction, they offered to show me where the clubhouse was. As we walked, they told me I wouldn’t be permitted to enter the clubhouse without an ID, so they offered to get me in as their guest. We chatted while we walked, and once we got there we were shocked by the remains from the New Year’s Eve party left in the ballroom from the night before. The cleanup crew had just arrived to clean tons of garbage, including party hats, streamers, and hundreds of empty bottles and cans. The women were appalled that the management was not recycling, so they decided to take what they could to the local recycling center. I offered to join them.
