CHAPTER 12
Joey
âOkay, where are we going?â he asked Reed.
Reed pointed south.
âYou said we were going east,â he commented. âYou sure your memory is doing okay?â
âBack in town, that was just a brain fart,â he admitted. âI havenât been under this much stress since showing up to my own wedding.â
âHey,â Sherry complained.
âBut Iâm good now,â he went on. âThe reason I said we were going east in front of those National Guard guys was to throw them off our scent. I donât trust anyone anymore.â
Joey thought about it for a few moments. âYeah, thatâs good advice. I donât know why, but I did trust them. Itâs easy to do.â
âIâm sure theyâre fine,â Reed allowed, âbut you can never be sure.â
It struck Joey that it might not have been safe to let the civilians go in those trucks. Even accepting the trust issue, they were in a hot war now. The guardsmen might be targeted by aircraft, and it would put the regular people at great risk. However, there was no real alternative. He certainly couldnât drive them around like heâd been doing. He would be no less of a target, and a hell of a lot slower.
The trucks were already over the horizon, gone.
âDo you really have a friendâs place to go to?â he asked.
Reed creased his brow. âYes, but I havenât been to Dickâs farm in quite a spell, maybe ten years. I know itâs south of New Greendale, since we used to drive to meet Atticus when the three of us got together. If you get me pretty close to the area, Iâm sure I can find the turnout.â
He sighed. Nothing was going the way he wanted. âPretty closeâ would have to do.
When he returned to the Mustang, Victoria and Georgie were at the rear bumper, wiping it down with a pair of towels theyâd used to clean off the illuminated paint earlier in the day.
âYou donât have to do that,â he commented.
âYou donât want this all over your car,â Victoria answered, not stopping.
He went to his door and stood there for a second.
âSomeone took my sunglasses,â he remarked, searching the area between the seats, then on the floor in the back.
âThat little kid had on a pair like yours,â Victoria said as she cleaned.
Heâd been wearing them earlier, so they knew what the frame looked like.
âBut I just thought his were similar,â she continued.
The girls stood up, satisfied with their work if their smiles were any hint.
âAt least my time working at the convenience store came to something,â Georgie bragged. âI got a lot of experience cleaning.â
Victoria was going to throw the towel into the back.
âWhoa!â he cautioned. âThose rags are biohazards. Just toss âem?â
âLitter?â Victoria asked with horror.
Georgie threw hers down without a second thought.
âWe canât keep them,â Joey clarified. âNot with all that blood.â
The younger girl glanced toward her mother.
Libby had an answer on standby. âWhatever Joey says, goes.â
Victoria did not appear happy.
âI promise when this is all over, Iâll make a donation to whatever group volunteers to come clean up this area.
