Character Ideas

When you are sketching out your character design ideas, the first drawings you make often have a spontaneous, energetic quality that it would be great to preserve in the final illustration. However, in these initial drawings the ideas and concepts might not be conveyed in the most effective way. The value in your preliminary sketches is their natural quality – they are a subconscious reaction to the character you are imagining. The key is to lay out a catalogue of ideas that can be refined and edited later. The term ‘iteration’ simply refers to the different variations of your initial idea, exploring new options and areas of emphasis with each subsequent drawing. These sketches show some clothing designs for soldiers and priests of a fictitious medieval city-state. They are not all successful, but there are some interesting silhouettes and shape details that I can use later in more refined designs.
