NINETEEN

ROXANNE AND MONTY headed our way. She looked angry and he looked like someone had spiked his tea with old coffee. Whatever conversation they’d just had hadn’t ended on a positive note.

“I will be keeping Corbel here for observation,” Roxanne said, looking at Peaches and rubbing him behind the ears. “I’m also going to need to run some tests on Hellhound saliva. Apparently, it has incredible healing properties. Who knew?”

<I knew.>

<I know you did.>

<My saliva has incredible healing properties, but not as amazing as the beautiful Rags. Her saliva is the best.>

<I don’t think she sees you the same way you see her. She seems a bit preoccupied with Cece.>

<That only means she is focused on her work. It’s not easy keeping a human out of trouble. I should know.>

<You should know? What does that mean?>

“Is Corbel conscious?” Monty asked, looking into the room. “I need to have a word.”

Roxanne nodded. “He should be able to answer some questions, but do not tax him, Tristan. He’s in no condition to exert himself. Hound of Hades or not, he needs rest.”

“Simon, I’ll meet you back at the car,” Monty said, pressing on the door and giving Roxanne a look. “We’ll continue our conversation later, if you have time.”

“I’d like that, Tristan. Over tea perhaps?”

“Perfect,” he said, stepping to the side and entering Corbel’s room. He glanced back and gave me a look in Montyspeak that said, ‘brace yourself for the wrath of the angry sorceress.’ I wasn’t looking forward to that.

“I need to do some rounds,” Roxanne said, grabbing a clipboard. “Walk with me, Simon.”

“What about Peaches? Isn’t he going to scare the personnel?”

“Not in this wing. Besides, he’s registered with Haven as your service dog,” she answered. “He can go anywhere in the facility.”

“My Hellhound has more clearance than I do?”

“His saliva probably saved Corbel’s life,” Roxanne snapped. “What can your saliva do, besides keep your mouth moist?”

Ouch. It was clear she wasn’t happy. It was a good thing I’d saved my Sting impersonation for another day. She’d probably blast me after the first note. Not everyone could appreciate my vocal stylings. It took a very refined ear, not that I was going to share that with the angry sorceress.

“It certainly doesn’t have healing properties,” I said as we entered an empty room. “Who’s in here, the invisible—?”

“Simon, what are you doing?” Roxanne asked with an edge to her voice. She turned, locking her eyes with mine. “Don’t you care about him?”

The questions caught me off guard for a split second.

“Are we still referring to Peaches?”

“Peaches? Are you daft? What is wrong with you?”

“Those sound like loaded questions.”

“I’m seriously considering admitting the both of you into the mental ward until this Hades thing is over.”

Her voice went up a few decibels and simultaneously dropped into menacing territory, setting off all my danger alarms. An angry sorceress is a fearsome sight.

I raised my hands in surrender, stepped back, and made sure I had access to my weapons. Monty would be pissed
