Chapter Twenty

“I wanted everyone here before I answered the question that everyone seems to have,” Raymond Redbird said once he had taken his place in a wingback chair at the end of the coffee table.

“I don’t,” Lindsey announced. She settled onto the end of the sofa directly adjacent to him.

The others arranged themselves on the two sofas on either side of him and facing a rectangular coffee table. Jesse took the comfy chair at the other end of the sofas, facing Raymond across the length of the coffee table.

“Deputy Collier is aware that I’m here since he buzzed me in through the front gate. Which would mean, I’m sure,” Raymond continued, “that Sheriff Tyler is also aware that I’m here. And since he arranged for you…” He paused to nod to Jesse, Sophia, and finally Lindsey before continuing. “…to be here for the express purpose of protecting you from whomever killed this Derrick Bronson person in front of your home last night, I can only assume that Sheriff Tyler does not consider me to be that person.”

Lindsey gave a firm nod of agreement. “Yes.”

“That would be a logical conclusion,” Vivian acknowledged. “Have you actually been interviewed by our good sheriff yet?”

“We’re supposed to get together later today, if possible. Or tomorrow morning at the latest.”

“Hm-m-m.” Vivian rose and crossed to a pot of coffee on the buffet near the entrance from the living room. “That would indicate that he doesn’t consider you a great threat. Would anyone like coffee? There’s enough here for several cups.”

“I think I’ll take another.” Sophia took her cup with her and joined Vivian at the buffet.

“There are muffins here.” Vivian lifted a plate with an assortment of muffins and turned to offer them to the others.

“My breakfast is long gone. I’ll take you up on that.” Raymond stood and went to the buffet. “What do you recommend?” he asked, eyeing the muffins as he poured himself a cup of coffee.

“Well, there’s blueberry, banana nut, spice, and…”

“Ah, blueberry then,” Raymond said before she could finish. “Always blueberry.”

Vivian turned the plate until the muffins he chose were facing him. Taking two, he put them on one of the dessert plates sitting next to the coffee cups.

“What size shoe do you wear?” SueAnn asked without transition.

“Who?” Vivian looked up and extended the muffin platter invitingly toward where SueAnn and Lindsey sat side-by-side on the sofa, with Jesse in the chair a few feet away.

Jesse shook her head no while SueAnn popped up and headed toward Vivian and the muffins.

“I would imagine it’s me that she’s talking to,” Raymond said, watching SueAnn’s approach. “Does this mean that you’ve found footprints somewhere?”

“There was snow on the ground,” she answered, passing him on her way to the assorted muffins.

“Of course.” He continued toward his chair with his coffee and dessert plate, talking as he reseated himself. “And that would mean there were footprints everywhere, then. I wear a size twelve. But it’s hard to determine shoe sizes in the snow. It melts.
