‘Lightning, lightning of heaven’, he called, ‘it glitters and it shines; the sun, the sun of the Zulus, it consumes all!’ It was a quick-witted retort, seizing on the apparent harmlessness of the British ‘lightning’, and contrasting it to the all-consuming ‘sun of the Zulus’, and the iNgobamakhosi ‘caught up the song, and quickly three thousand throats were yelling it as we moved forward down the ridge’.21

The Zulu skirmishers quite sensibly veered off towards the donga to one side of the battery’s position. Here they disappeared for a few seconds, dropping down among some rocks about 200 metres away from where they fired a volley – and Russell’s command immediately fell apart. According to Captain Nourse:

The Zulus were lying not a hundred paces off in the tall grass, and with that buzzing Usutu of theirs they were on us. It electrified the donkeys, which hee-hawed down the hill with the speed of race-horses, in spite of their packs. My men disappeared as if by magic, and though a bit slow on the take-off, I myself reached the hill in respectable time. Major Russell, who was mounted, was with me. As the Zulus were not pressing their success with undue haste, we halted to survey the scene. Just then a shot struck Major Russell and caused him to drop from his horse. I lifted him onto his horse and thought he could manage to get clear . . .22
