We didn’t say much on the way home. Ty looked like a balloon that had been leaking air for a while. He pulled my car into its spot on the driveway, then removed our bags from the back. On the porch he hugged me and told me he was going to take a nap and he’d call when he was ready to start packing in case I still wanted to help.

“Okay.” I kissed his cheek. “I’ll make sure I answer my phone after all this time.” Upstairs I drank most of a bottle of wine while everything I told Ty at the farm howled around my head like a storm, and Samuel was the terrible thunder and lightning rolled up in each other. The urge to sleep struck, so I curled up under my quilt and indulged it.

When I woke up, I heard Ty’s voice from downstairs, just like before when he talked to Scotty and for a moment I thought everything that happened in the past weeks had been a nasty dream. However, reality set in and I suspected he was talking to Erin. Emotions rose and I felt like a dope, an immature child of a woman who would drive a man crazy with her petty jealousies and expectations.
