Remove the “S” from “Values” to Create Value

The heartbeat of the tribe is its core values; this is what comprises the collective passion that drives its actions and relationships. It is also the reason why people want to be a part of or spend time with your tribe.

When people ask you what your core values are, can you answer clearly and concisely? In his book Good to Great, Jim Collins suggests that core values are ideals that under no circumstances you would surrender. These are strong words; do they accurately project the importance of core values within the tribe? The concrete jungle is constantly shifting and evolving. This means that tribes must avoid adopting an all or nothing mindset. They must instead discern the reason why people do business with their tribe.

But can it be that simple? Could it be that all we need to do is remove the s from values to see the jungle in a new way? In this way, values become the foundation of the tribe as it relates to you, the decisions you make, how you choose to manage and lead, and ultimately, the legacy you will leave. Values define value—which means that we are able to connect our values to those outside our organization, thereby providing a foundation of the tribe’s survival in the concrete jungle. Here are four reasons why:

1. Values determine the tribe’s collective passion.

2. Collective passion drives actions.

3. Actions drive performance.

4. Performance ties directly to the explanation of who we are, what we do, and why we matter as an organization to those outside it.
