It is often better therefore to minimize talk. You might even get an overtly negative response. This does not necessarily mean that someone is not well disposed toward you. But you must still expend effort to defend your plan internally even if you do not externally defend it. Since people’s reactions, even the most innocent ones, can have corrosive effects on your resolve—particularly before you have made an absolute decision to go forward—pay attention to your intentions and your need for approval.

This is not to say that you cannot benefit from having a sounding board. Remember, however, that your decision to change is yours. You should never put it in someone else’s hands. Deciding whom you will talk to and how much you will choose to reveal is up to you, but for all these reasons I suggest proceeding cautiously.
