Choose MyPlate.gov is a fairly new Website that showcases the newer icon MyPlate, which took the place of the Food Guide Pyramid in 2010. MyPlate works hand-in-hand with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans to help people:
Make smarter choices from each food group
Find a healthy balance between food and physical activity
Get the most nutrition out of calories consumed
Stay within daily calorie needs
The MyPlate icon is a familiar mealtime visual that emphasizes the five food groups, which are the foundation of a healthy diet. It divides the dinner plate into four sections, for fruits, vegetables, grains, and proteins, with a fifth, smaller plate to one side for dairy foods. MyPlate illustrates these food groups as separate colors and different sizes on the plate. For example, the fruit (red) and vegetable (green) portions make up half of the plate to emphasize the recommendation that fruits and vegetables should make up at least half of every meal.
