The presence of others applies a bit differently to exercise, because the people present are usually socially supportive workout partners or simply other individuals concurrently exercising on their own (e.g., while weight training at a public facility). Family social support is a strong predictor of exercise maintenance for women, and individuals who exercise with their spouses have higher rates of exercise adherence than those who exercise alone. Research has demonstrated that physical activity levels of children are related to the modeling of such activity, shared activities, social support, and encouragement within families. Several studies have demonstrated that active children perceive more parental encouragement than inactive children. The social isolation of many elderly people is problematic because social incentives to engage in physical activity decrease with age. Community-based programs can ensure the important social support for habitual physical activity participation for all ages.

Family support and modeling are highly predictive of the physical activity participation of children, whereas elderly people tend to become less physically active because of social isolation.
