Just a word about this risk/benefit chart. It’s provided for you as a kind of basis for your thinking about what kind of treatment you wish to pursue. There is a tendency for the higher-benefit procedures to carry a higher risk. (The McKenzie Program is an exception.) To some degree you will only be offered treatment that is appropriate for your individual condition as regards risks and benefits. Obviously, you should not be offered surgery unless the time is right. Also, this chart is not based on a common diagnosis. Note also that “liberal” selection for surgery carries the same high risks but low benefits when compared with “conservative” selection. Conservative selection is where the patient has an imaging evidence of a distinct disc herniation, a physical exam which confirms this, and a trial of at least six weeks of nonsurgical treatment. Liberal selection is when one or more of these criteria are not present.
