Chapter 23
Kaeja
I spent the next fourteen days on stress leave from work, crying until my tears ran out. I bathed, did my hair, ate, went for a few walks, and I finally felt well enough to go to work. I had an open house for a client, and if I didn’t get it together, I would have to pass this deal to one of my associates. I was grateful that the client wanted me to be the person to sell her house.
As far as Avian and I were concerned, we were done. I didn’t have to worry about going to his house to get my things because he had them delivered by movers as if he couldn’t wait to get my shit out of there. He had someone else pack up my shit and drop it off. I was livid, but Soraya had a good point when she said at least I didn’t have to see his face again.
After showering, dressing, and doing my hair, I threw my shades over my eyes and closed the door to my bedroom behind me before leaving to head to an open house I’d scheduled. Soraya was in the kitchen, making breakfast.
“Look who’s alive,” Soraya joked. “I’m happy you feel good enough to get out of the house and go to work.”
“Yeah, I had to take some time to get my mind together. I can’t waste away in my bedroom any longer. Plus I could use the money right now. The good news is that I have an open house today.”
“I’m sure you’ll get an offer. You always do.”
“Thanks. I’ve been so consumed with me that I meant to ask you about you and Kyree. I haven’t seen him around lately, and you haven’t even mentioned his name. What’s up with that?”
“There’s no need to bring him up. I am no longer seeing Kyree, but that is another story, so we need to have drinks.”
“I feel like such a bad friend because you’ve been there for me and I was so busy being depressed that I hadn’t noticed you were going through something too.”
“Kae, I’m good. Trust me, but we will have drinks when you come home this evening. Okay?”
“Okay,” I said. “Well, I hope you have a good day too.”
“Thanks, girl. I’ll see you later,” she said.
“Bye.” I walked out of the apartment and headed down the stairs.
I headed down the walkway to where my car was parked against the curb. As much as I hated driving the white Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 because it was a gift from Avian, I didn’t have any other wheels to roll in. After thirteen years of being together without any real breaks, my life was feeling weird without him. I understood that no man was going to be perfect, but I couldn’t tolerate disrespect. Thirteen years wasted, and I was simply trying to figure out how to put the pieces of my life back in order. That day was the first step I took toward finding happiness.
I backed out of the stall and headed to the grocery store.
