If you are not to get over-expanded, it does help to remember that whatever it is you are doing is part of a larger picture.

Yes, you are hopefully choosing to do something you love doing, and to get the rewards that come with it. Yes, what you have chosen to do may well be contributing enormously to the world. On another level, however, you are playing your part, but you are not the whole show.

It is a rule of thumb that if you are seeing yourself as single-handedly saving the world, or even your world, you are probably caught in illusion and are at one pole or another. Illusions can become dangerous whether you succeed and over-expand, becoming a bit messianic, or you fail and contract, becoming hopeless and depressed.

It is not a time for Superman or Superwoman. You are a member of a team, even if you don’t know all the members.

In my work on burnout, I have found that this understanding can mean the difference between burning out and burning on. Superman is bound to fail someday, whereas someone who is a team member can just learn a new role if the old one doesn’t work.

What is the larger picture? In an immediate way it might be the family or group you are part of. Or it might be the people all over the world who are working towards positive goals. And on another level, we are part of the interconnected web that includes all of humanity, the planet and all its inhabitants.

Our largest truth always includes a connection to that which goes beyond our personal selves. I love the words of Rabbi Hillel, If I am not for myself, who will be for me? And when I am only for myself what am I? And if not now, when?
