CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Johnny had followed after Buck shortly after he’d made his quick exit from their private car. When Buck reached the dining car and saw that Colleen wasn’t there, he found a table near the middle from where he could watch both ends of the railcar. If he saw her, he knew he could duck beneath the table and she wouldn’t see him. That was his plan, and he thought it was a good one.

He glanced out the window for just a moment when a voice startled him. “I’ve been looking high and low for you. Bet you thought you’d gotten away, huh?”

Buck’s heartbeat raced and was still pounding when he looked up and tried to look unfazed. “Oh, hey Johnny. Whatcha doing?” He laughed nervously. “I wasn’t trying to get away from you. I was just, uh, wanting to get a drink. You want something to drink?” He stood up and looked to see where he might find a drink.

“Buck! Sit down here and quit trying to play games with me. You’re up to something. You’re hiding something. You’re doing something! Come clean with me and tell me what you’re really doing here on this train. And don’t give me no story about your ma dying and your suitcase getting stolen. Tell the truth.”

Buck sat down, put his elbows on the table, and cupped his hands under his jaw. He took in great big, quiet gasps of air and blew them out slowly. He wouldn’t cry in front of his new friend—not for anything. He looked around and thought about bolting for a door. But where could he go?

“You promise not to tell anyone what I’m about to tell you?”

Johnny shook his head. “No. I can’t do that. Tell me anyway.”

“Whadaya mean you can’t promise me that? I can’t tell you unless you swear to keep a secret. Please,” Buck implored.

Just then the front end of the railcar opened and in walked the conductor. Colleen was directly behind him, turning to close the door.

Buck slid under the table as fast as he could.

Johnny did a double take at whatever it was that Buck had seen that made him duck for cover so quickly. Seeing the conductor turning and helping a blonde-haired woman secure the door, Johnny quickly slid under the table with Buck.

“Shh,” he said as he made himself as small as he could.

Buck stared at him wide-eyed. “Shh,” he whispered back. They waited quietly together a long moment after the two adults had passed their table.

Finally, Johnny peeked into the aisle and watched for long enough to observe the two were stopping to ask something of every individual or group of passengers they came upon. Finally, he saw them leave the railcar and he climbed back up into the seat. “Come on up now, they’re gone,” he said impatiently.

When Buck had ensured they’d indeed gone, he made his way back up onto the bench. “Thanks,” he mumbled, eyes downcast. Then he looked up. “I thought you couldn’t help me.
