I chat with the other people waiting—

Jews: with lawn chairs and lemonade,

waiting so long they seem not to care.

Black folk: going to work, perhaps.

Most know the he came already,

didn’t pick them up.

They’ll wait for the next one.

While I wait, I chat with my dead grandma.

She says the messiah might not be a man,

so I should be careful who I fall in love with.

She laughs.

Some of us are pretty sure

the messiah is coming back

and some of us are pretty sure Elvis is too.

Aaron you don’t really believe in God do you?

Look around, look at all the silly people

waiting.

But Grandma, I say,

how can so many people be wrong?

How is it possible for this many people

to be wrong?
