On a more positive note, Americans demonstrate their community engagement in ways outside of what would be considered traditional civic and government activity. They are more involved in nonprofit activities and give more money per capita than in any developed country in the worldâand no other country is even close. According to the National Philanthropic Trust, 88 percent of US households give to charity, and the inflation-adjusted total amount donated to charities has more than doubled over the last forty years. Volunteerism is likewise strong with over sixty million Americans providing over fifteen billion hours of service.
This propensity to engage in community needs and activities is a towering strength in our culture and an asset that can be leveraged even more effectively to address some of our more challenging issues. Beyond the engagement of businesses and governments, nonprofits and their volunteers represent a powerful, well-respected force, creating a third pillar to support action and progress. Iâve seen the amazing impact this engagement drives through my work with the Boys and Girls Clubs, both locally and nationally.
Perhaps a good way to summarize this report card is to look at two case studies in local communities I know well to understand the dynamics at play.
THE MICROBREW SOLUTION
I was raised on the north side of Milwaukee, WI, in a comfortable, suburban community with good schools, close-knit families, and traditional values. In my mindâs eye, it was an idyllic time filled with sports activities, nights of Capture the Flag, and plenty of bike riding in the neighborhood. I won a sectional championship in Little League, explored the shores of Lake Michigan, and experienced my first kiss. Once the brewing capital of America, Milwaukee has gone through wholesale changes over the succeeding thirty years, many of them positive and some more challenging.
By 2006, Milwaukee had the dubious distinction of having the nationâs second highest teen birth rate amongst the fifty largest cities in the country, second only to Philadelphia. A group of concerned community organizations, led by the United Way of Greater Milwaukee, banded together in 2008 to form the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative. They set a goal to reduce the teen birth rate by almost 50 percent by 2015. To achieve this aggressive target, they developed an integrated strategy that focused heavily on working with partners across the civic and social landscapes to influence teens. The United Way worked with the Milwaukee Public Schools, the University of Wisconsin, the city of Milwaukeeâs Public Health Department, and a broad base of public health affiliated nonprofits in the city.
They raised funds from local charitable foundations, corporations, and local media companies to fund a large, aggressive public awareness campaign. This campaign included advertising, YouTube videos and quizzes, and an integrated website that delivered blunt messages about teenage sex and teen pregnancy. Milwaukee Public Schools changed its human growth and development curriculum to incorporate stronger messages related to sex and reproduction, and all groups worked aggressively to encourage teens and parents to discuss sexual issues early and often.
