ACTIVITY 9
1 Describe an event from your past in a way that contains lots of short sentences.
2 Write it again but this time in the form of a few long sentences.
3 Decide if your work is improved by either method and if you need to work on this aspect of your writing.
Conclusion
You will now have looked at your own style of writing and will have some ideas for making changes where you believe you could add immediacy and variety. In this way, you will hopefully ensure that your readers stay glued to the page rather than being turned off by any part of it.
And now try this.....
Some of the areas covered in this chapter are quite hard to introduce into writing if you are fairly new to them, although perhaps adding extra details and varying sentence length are less so.
Write a short piece that includes examples of both âshow and tellâ and some dialogue and also any other aspects covered so far in the book that you may be having trouble with. If you are rewriting material you are not happy with, ask a friend to compare them and see how much improvement the changes have made.
