FIRST DRAFT (using too many hooks): With a hard thud and the stench of blood and entrails scattered over the yard I watched, not even able to scream, as a man slammed from the sky headfirst in front of me.
This draft contains the following seven hooks: Danger; since most of us do not deal with people dying violently and unexpectedly in front of us; Overpowering Emotion; violent death combined with the inability to scream implies strong to overpowering emotion; a Surprising Situation; since this is not one the average reader encounters or hears about, it’d qualify as a surprise to the reader as well as a surprise to the character watching; introducing a Unique Character; how many people do you know who have had a person fall from the sky and die in front of them? If it’s in the single digits, it makes this character unique; Foreshadowing; the assumption here is that this episode will play out in an important way deeper into the story; the Totally Unexpected; we know this by her response; and Raises a story Question or questions.
Seven hooks creates a very strong degree of tension on the page, and is not what most readers of Amateur Sleuths are anticipating for a novel more on the light-reading-before-bedtime read.
So let’s pretend the author started with these seven hooks and reeled them back.
