Asmita had begun editing Abhimanyu’s manuscript. For her it was not just editing the work of an author, or even a bestselling author, for that matter. She was now editing the work of someone she had been intimate with. It was a different experience altogether. Of course, it was her responsibility to do a good job on every book, but with this particular manuscript, she no longer felt like it was only Abhimanyu’s work. She felt like she was part of it, that it was their work, in a whole new sense.

She wanted this book to stand out from all the others he had written till date. She wanted him to stand out.

The question of ethics, of whether it was right for her, as an editor, to kiss her author and make love to him over midnight chats didn’t bother her. Till date she had never mixed work with pleasure, but now that it was happening, she was enjoying every bit of it. Every time morality stared at her, she looked at her bosses at PaperInk and recalled what they had done to her. She was better off, she deduced. The irony was that she had fallen in love with the person her bosses had wanted her to care about so much. And now she was doing exactly that, at a whole new level.

Life is stranger than fiction, after all. How else was it possible for an editor who had abhorred an author so much to fall in love with him because of his work? It’s a great plot, she thought. Maybe, someday, this too could become a book – an editor’s affair with her author. She smiled to herself, shook her head and returned to her edits.

Asmita channelled all her enthusiasm into shaping Abhimanyu’s work. She saw herself as accountable for the success of this new book. She wanted to become the woman behind this man’s success. That was her sole goal. This time she wanted to impress the man who had captivated her with his words. She wanted to bring him more of what he cherished the most – fame.
