CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

HOURS AFTER Cyrus and Zane ate and made love again, Cyrus set out to start the chores for the day. Because of their extended session, he didn’t make it out of the guesthouse until after eight, leaving Zane in bed, lounging and begging him to stay.

Unfortunately, Cyrus didn’t have that luxury. In order to keep the mortgage from being late, he had to get the grains ready for pickup around four, tend the herd, and get his best cattle ready for the auction at the end of the week, while Brian took care of the horses, pigs, and chickens. Sure, he would’ve loved to sit back and let Brian do everything, but as Zane said himself, it wouldn’t be fair. There were way too many things to do for just one person on this ranch, which is why Cyrus hired Brian Daystar in the first place.

On his trusted black stallion, Bret, Cyrus watched over his herd, with Woofer not too far behind. His beloved mutt seemed to notice he was three hours late.

“Yeah.” Cyrus gripped the reins tightly and steered his horse toward the center of his two-acre penning yard to allow the herd to graze. He pulled his Stetson off and wiped his forehead with his sleeve, already hot from the scorching sun rising in the skies. Usually in Montana, the temperature didn’t truly rise until right before noon, but today Mother Nature had other ideas. With the way Cyrus was perspiring, it felt like it had already hit ninety. Cyrus hated a lot of hot weather, but when he bought the place, the solitude and greenery had won him over.

“Cyrus?” Brian called out to him, looking as if he’d already been working for a while.

“Yeah, what’s up Daystar? You just getting here, or…,” Cyrus replied and held on when Bret ambled slowly over to Brian on his own. “Whoa, there. You really love you some Brian, don’t you?”

Brian patted the horse’s head and kissed his nose. “Well, at least somebody does.” He sighed and looked away from Cyrus.

“What?”

Brian drew up his lips into a sneer. “Nothing, Cyrus. Listen, I already tended the herd this morning. You’re overdoing it. I would’ve told you, but I didn’t see you in the house. And since I didn’t want to walk into the guesthouse unannounced….”

“Shit.” Cyrus plopped his Stetson back on his head. “No wonder Woofer was barking like everything and these cows ain’t eating. Why didn’t you call me, boy?”

Brian shot Cyrus a glare while he rubbed the underside of the horse’s neck. “How, ol’ man? You don’t own a freaking cell phone like I been telling you to get for years. How the hell am I supposed to get in touch with you? Smoke signals?”

Cyrus had to chuckle at that. “Call the house phone. I’m telling you, I don’t need no cell when I got house phones all over the place.”

“But you weren’t in the main house, dumbass, you were in the guesthouse, doing who knows what with pretty boy!” Brian snarled.
