Chapter Sixteen

“Jeremy, I’d like to thank you again for coming out with us yesterday. The kids really enjoyed your company.” Skylar decided not to ask him to join her and the children at the park but she issued an invite for lunch afterwards to the kid’s favorite fast food restaurant. The triplets really seemed to like him, especially Finn and Harper. Tristan, on the other hand, seemed a bit distance although he wasn’t exactly rude. Skylar found it bizarre considering he was the one who had wanted her to invite Jeremy in the first place. Thankfully Jeremy took the little boy’s behavior in stride, or pretended not to notice. Either way, Skylar considered the outing a relative success.

She really enjoyed spending time with the Jeremy who she found she could laugh with and have stimulating conversation. That the kids liked him was a bonus. Later, after she had put the children to bed, Jeremy had called to ask her out to dinner the following night to a hot new restaurant that he’d wanted to try for a while. Skylar gladly accepted on the condition that her mother or Izzy could watch the kids. Both women were happy to sit for her and Skylar was grateful to get out of the house. It kept her from obsessing over what Ashley’s next move would be.

Jeremy reached across the table and placed his hand on hers. “I enjoyed them as well. It was my pleasure. I was pleased that you asked me to join you. After you told me what you did about the children, I kind of worried about my chances with you.”

Skylar frowned at the oddity of his statement. “Why would you think that? I really like you, Jeremy. And you said yourself that you wanted to give us a chance and I’d like that too. Ashley has nothing to do with us.”

He raised a dark brow. “Are you sure about that? From my perspective, you’ve been a bit distracted tonight. There were a few times when I was talking and you weren’t paying attention. Should I be concerned?”

Skylar lowered her lids to look down at her half-eaten meal. “I don’t think so, but I need to be honest with you.”

“This sound ominous.”

“Ashley came by the house on Friday.”

“What? Did he somehow find out about the children?”

She shook her head. “He didn’t know before he came over but he knew by the time he left.”

“Then why did he stop by?”

“Actually, he’d come by my office earlier that week but I ducked out. That’s probably why he decided to track me down at my house. He wanted to warn me off from you. He basically tried to threaten me if I didn’t stop seeing you.”

Jeremy pounded his fist on the table. “That son of a bitch. He came by my office and basically tried to warn me against seeing you.”

“He did?”

“Yes. I didn’t mention it because I didn’t want to upset you. He said some pretty harsh things.”

“Jeremy, I never meant to come between your friendship with Ashley.
