You Are the VIP of Your Own Life

At a speaking event this year, I was standing on stage taking photos with some of the audience members after my hour-long keynote speech. The organizer of that particular event had arranged for everyone who had purchased a VIP ticket, which was about 10 percent of the audience, to get a photo with each of the speakers. The next day I received this message on Instagram from someone who was not in the VIP line that day, a woman named Abbey:

“Just a huge thank-you for your message at the event. My eighteen-year-old daughter Grace and I flew in from Iowa. I’m a single mom to her and her fifteen-year-old sister who were orphans from the Central African Republic until God brought us together five years ago. An answer to three souls’ prayers. Grace wants to have her own business and is working on believing she’s worthy. She has clarity and knows her why. Right now she is upstairs taking massive action creating videos. She wasn’t allowed to meet you as we were not VIP at the event, and she was very disappointed. As she isn’t ready to see rejection as God’s protection just yet [a reference from my speech that day]. But I believe she will grow and achieve in the future so that she gets in the VIP line to thank you in person. Thank you for bringing God into your message as well, I couldn’t ask for a better mentor for my girls. We see you, we truly see you . . . [heart emoji]”

Cue waterworks. As I sat reading this message in my Instagram DMs on my phone, I relished her strength and character. This single mom, Abbey, is the VIP of her own life. She didn’t need a VIP ticket. Her belief in herself and her daughters was the best example of mentorship they could possibly see. In this single DM, without any ask attached, Abbey did the things above that I believe are so important. She didn’t press the easy button or ask for anything. She simply shared how her daughter was upstairs working on her dream business right now, which happened to be crocheted earrings, clothing, handbags, bracelets, coasters, and more, and Abbey was encouraging her all the way. She also understood the importance of adding value to others, as in this single message she sent, letting me know that what I shared that day was seen, heard, and mattered to her and her daughter. Her sharing this with me, is her adding value to me. The most valuable kind of value. She has the confidence that she and her daughters will figure it out and trust in themselves and their faith. And she sent the message without asking for anything at all—she simply sent it with the intention of sharing her experience and saying thank you.

I sat in my living room with tears streaming down my face, imagining her daughter with hopes and dreams, upstairs in her bedroom filming videos to help get the word out about her business.
