Chills wracked Lindsay’s body, and her mind wouldn’t focus. Perhaps she was still dreaming of Barry. Off in the distance his deep voice calmed her slightly until soon her body grew warmer and her shivers stopped. Her mouth dried, yet she didn’t have the energy to moisten it with a swallow.
Through a fog, her mind took her back to the marketplace, back to the moment she’d kissed Barry so passionately. Her heart flipped with happiness, and she wanted to experience that again, and again, and again...
But her father’s face appeared before her, and disappointment shown in his eyes. She had disgraced the family by kissing Barry, and by being on his ship. As soon as she could open her eyes and come awake, she’d have Barry return her home quickly. Hopefully, all was not lost and her family would never know how she’d disobeyed her father.
Gradually, her mind ceased from racing, and she fell asleep, only to be awakened by a loud noise. She jumped and snapped open her eyes. The room wasn’t what she’d been used to seeing, and she blinked, trying to gain her bearings.
A sweet aroma wafted through the room. Her stomach growled. Eggs. How long had it been since she’d eaten last? The way her stomach grumbled, she’d think it had been days, but she knew she’d eaten yesterday while at the marketplace.
When her focus cleared and she gazed at the man in the room, she did all she could not to sigh aloud. Barry. He knelt by a trunk, digging through some clothes. He appeared different than he’d been yesterday, more casual wearing only a long-sleeve, beige shirt opened at the throat and a gold and black vest that hadn’t been buttoned up. Instead of trousers as he’d been wearing at the marketplace, he wore breeches. But it was his hair that left her mesmerized. It was so long. She hadn’t seen it this long before, but then he’d tied it back with a strip of leather before. Now it flowed down his shoulders and back as he leaned over the trunk. Indeed, he was in need of a haircut soon.
She adjusted herself on the bed and the blankets around her slipped to her waist. Cooler air touched her skin and she gasped. Why was she wearing a man’s thin blouse? The neck of the garment had tied together at her throat, yet it was still very loose, and displayed too much of her cleavage.
From the corner of the room, Barry jerked around and faced her. His eyes widened in surprise. Immediately, his gaze dropped to her bosom. Quickly, she yanked the blankets up to cover herself.
“You’re awake,” he said, standing.
“Yes.” Her voice croaked so she cleared it. “How did I get here...and where are my clothes?”
He moved to the edge of the mattress and sat beside her. “You are in my cabin on the ship, and you are wearing one of my shirts because your clothes were wet and making you cold.”
“Who, um...are there any women on this ship?”
“No.
