Car->driver functions are those that enable the vehicle to communicate to the driver what it is doing, both in responding to driver requests and in autonomously initiating messages and operations:

•Performance feedback, which might include messages that speed is excessive or to avoid passing

•Feedback to driver requests, for instance, acknowledgment of the driver requests just listed

•Safety actions, such as signaling automated maneuvers to avoid collision or to pull out of the way of emergency vehicles

•Contextual assistance, for example, suggesting directions to a gas station when the tank is low

•Situation awareness support, such as informing the driver about nearby congestion or approaching adverse weather

•Automation transparency, which might be informing the driver why the automation has taken certain decisions, such as slowing the vehicle, to maintain trust in the system.
