Recycle it.Check with your town or city sanitation department for their regulations about taking books in with regular recycling.

Check for a commercial recycler in your area.

Destroy it.Incinerate, if that is an option.

Use a Dumpster or trash bin.

Try to do so in a way that does not make your ownership obvious to minimize the ire of the Nicholson Bakers in your neighborhood.

There are a couple of other options for books that may be in poor condition but meet the other criteria for retention, and these include repair or rebinding as seen on the disposal slip. In general the time and expense needed to do this may outweigh the importance or value of the book. Quick and dirty repairs are a short-term solution to extend the life of a popular book; rebinding can be costly but is also an option for a book that is too important to discard. These methods will be discussed in a subsequent chapter.

If a discard is old or rare it may be potentially valuable. The value of most books is intrinsic—that is, it has value to the owner. Library markings, book jackets (or the lack thereof), and the condition of the book make a difference. Check with local experts if there are any in your area. Otherwise, try online booksellers such as ABE books, Bibliofind, Amazon, eBay, Alibris, Book Finder, and Rarebooks. You may find a number of copies of your title in various conditions and at various prices—many unsold after weeks or months on the market—but you could also hit the jackpot and find that your copy is desired at a good price.
