These data were helpful in analyzing findings related to help seeking and harm reduction because they clearly document, albeit in discrete form, the totalizing impacts of substance abuse, mental and physical health problems, and homelessness or precarious housing. The frequency with which these commonalities occur in the lives of women seeking services at the transitional housing facility is particularly striking when compared with the relatively high levels of education and experiences with legal forms of work reported by the women. Taken together, this quantitative material suggests an iterative process whereby women’s struggles with addiction or related mental health problems intervene in their ability to stay housed or employed, making street-based sex trading in the neighborhood where they purchase and use illicit drugs the most readily available means by which they can generate an income.
