The WJ IV’s Greatest Weakness
Received wisdom has it that when interviewers ask job candidates “What is your greatest weakness?” the proper response is to give some sort of variant of “Aw shucks! I suppose that when it comes to my greatest strength, I’m a little too awesome for my own good.” In the case of the WJ IV, this answer might actually be the truth. Many of its strengths are so strong that even veteran users can feel overwhelmed by the complexity. Although I believe that the scoring output could be streamlined intelligently, I far prefer too much complexity to too little nuance.
The WJ IV leads us to make many distinctions within and between cognitive and academic abilities, but it is not clear that all of these distinctions are consequential. One example among many: On what basis should I distinguish between Gs and Perceptual Speed?
