Over coffee with Amanda after the school reunion, she gave me the run-down on her life. Like many victims of divorce, she was struggling to move on. It was a ‘no fault’ divorce and the breakdown of her marriage left her feeling sad, angry and confused. While these are not unusual emotions considering the circumstances, it had been five years since the divorce and her emotions had become increasingly more destructive. She had lost a number of boyfriends, two jobs, and many old friends who were sick of hearing her story over and over again. I noticed she had a permanent tone of self-righteous indignation in her voice and had developed an argumentative style that emerged quickly in any situation. She found fault with the staff and the coffee at the cafe where we met, and her stories revealed that she also took issue with her neighbours, her new employer, and even her own accountant. But when I asked Amanda if she was happy she said, with indignation, ‘Of course I am. I’m much better off without him. I’m over it.’
