PART II: UNDERSTANDING SECOND LABELS

Second-label wines are usually produced from a château’s youngest vines. The wines they produce are lighter in style and quicker to mature than those made from the grapes of older, classified stock. Second-label wines will cost at least one-third to a half of that of the château wine and are another way of buying good Bordeaux wine without breaking the budget. Although second-label wines are not a new concept in Bordeaux—the Clos du Marquis produced its first second-label wine in 1902—most châteaux began producing second-label wines in the mid-1980s.

By taking the second-label wine of Château Léoville Las Cases, the Clos du Marquis 2004, and tasting it side by side with Léoville Las Cases 2004, you will see the value of looking for second labels.

Wine #5: Clos du Marquis 2004

All the great châteaux of Bordeaux now produce a second label, and Clos du Marquis is considered one of the best and most consistent in quality. It is by no means a “second” wine, and in great years the Clos du Marquis is of the same or better quality than many of the classified growths. The year 2004 was very good in Bordeaux; this wine, five years later, has its components in perfect harmony with firm tannins and forward fruit.
