Look Up!

When you find a clearing that meets your needs, spend some time looking overhead for what are called “widow-makers” — large broken branches that are dangling above the ground, or entire dead trees that might fall over. They are a hazard because you never know when they might become dislodged by wind or rain and fall. Set up your camp at least 100 feet away from any hazards that you see.

Lightning strike. It is a total myth that lightning never strikes the same place twice, so if you see a tree with lightning damage, build your camp somewhere else.
