Chapter 22.

Body Memory

MY INTIMATE CONVERSATIONS WITH BUDDY addressed things important to us both. I needed connection, and he needed clarity. To get that connection, I found that the more I treated Buddy honestly—even clucking to him if he gave me a rude face—the more supple and engaged he became. When I asked him with firm body energy to move over when I was cleaning his feet, or not to nibble at my sleeve, Buddy actually paid more attention to me, not less. And then he offered things I didn’t ask, too, like lowering his head and willingly poking his nose into the halter. Finding me instead of me trying to find him.

Ken had taught me that this wasn’t some secret “horse-whispering” code known only to a precious few. This was available to everyone, but it required holding one’s own self accountable. I needed to take stock of my own motives as well as being sensitive to how Buddy was feeling.

Not exactly easy, no matter how good the words sound. Sometimes words just got in the way of this difficult art because it wasn’t about my language at all; it was about Buddy’s.
