Chapter 17

E sma and Astrid were in the nursery, a bright airy room full of toys, the walls papered with teddy bears and rainbows. It was an inviting, cozy place to hang out with Kostya and far enough away from the rest of the household that they wouldn’t be overheard.

“You’re going to have to get to Mack before Anto does.” Esma was sitting in a rocking chair that was placed at an angle near a big alcove window that overlooked the back of the estate. Trees for miles, but the perimeter of the yard fenced, alarmed and well guarded by both men and dogs.

Astrid twirled in a circle, holding the 10-month-old heavyweight parallel to her, then brought him back and blew a raspberry on his naked belly. Kostya was kicking, cooing, laughing, helping her feel better about the last 24 hours. “I kind of like my head attached to my shoulders,” she grumbled as she came up for air.

“I’ll deal with Rusya. He knows how close you and I are. He wouldn’t hurt me by hurting you. I promise.”

Astrid swung Kostya in the opposite direction, whooping with him as she did it. “Sure, let’s go with that - you’ve got him under control, and he would never kill me. Even if that’s true, how am I supposed to get to Mack?”

Esma grinned widely. Astrid was familiar with that look. In her previous life, Esma had been pretty fucking good at tracking down people and her confident grin confirmed what Astrid already knew. “I’ve found him.”

Astrid pulled Kostya into her chest as she flipped around to stare at Esma. “How the fuck do you know where he is?”

“It’s what I do. I’ve got skills too, even if Rusya doesn’t let me use them.”

Kostya started wiggling and whining and Astrid put him down the floor, dragging a noisy toy phone over to him. It was his favourite and he banged on it, gurgling and blowing bubbles as it dinged back at him. “Okay, so you’ve pinned him down. Don’t you think Rusya is going to notice my absence?”

Esma nodded. “Yeah I do. I’m going to tell him you’re upset and needed a few days off to recalibrate.”

Astrid let out a nervous laugh as she sat cross-legged on the floor in front of Kostya. “Sure. He’s questioning my loyalty because I let you talk me into letting you risk your life.” Astrid air quoted while Esma rolled her eyes at Rusya’s overreaction. “Now I’m asking for days off? I don’t think that’s going to wash with the big guy.”

Esma pushed off the floor with her foot and rocked back and forth in the chair. “He’s going to be pissed, sure. But I’ll tell him how upset you were. Crying, hysterical. Terrified.”

Astrid shook her head. “Not funny. I don’t do hysterical.”

“I know that, you know that. But Rusya doesn’t. I’ll use his misogyny against him – he’ll think because you’re a woman, that you’re faint of heart, crumbling under his threats.”

Astrid disagreed. “He knows better.
