Personal Care Products
Until my son became ill, I never thought I had a toxic product in my home. Then, after I made the connection between his illness and cleaning products, I didnât consider that the wonderful luxury items I bought for myself, such as the newest shade of lipstick, the hair product, or perfume, were harmful to him and to me. I didnât think about how often my son was on my lap, sitting on my clothes, breathing my perfume and the scent of all the other products I had splashed on, lathered up, or submerged myself in that morning. I also didnât make the connection between my ânormalâ everyday headaches and my choices in the first 20 minutes of every morning in the bathroom.
Now, looking back, I am shocked that I accepted headaches, feeling tired, and morning aches and pains as normal andâworst yetâfeeling âjust adequateâ as an okay quality of life. Never for a moment did I ask why I felt lousy. I chalked it up to getting older. I could not have been more wrong.
It wasnât until I saw the agony of my child and sought answers that it began to dawn on me that chemicals might be prevalent in my home and might be harmful to a person who supposedly was not ill. I had thought that if I could just âget through the day,â I was healthy. If I could âkeep upâ with all my responsibilities, I was being productive. Boy, was I accepting, and my new knowledge made me realize how low I had set my standards. Now, with my home free of many of the toxins that used to live with us, I can get so much more out of each day of my life, and the rewards far exceed my expectations.
Once I began to read labels, I was amazed at what they said. Where was I that I missed these warnings? Did you know that most toothpastes warn on the label that if you ingest more than a pea-size amount, you should call poison control? Poison control for something that you use in your mouth? Do you know that the manufacturers of mouthwashes warn you not to swallow their products? How can you put something in your mouth and not swallow any of it?
