Deadpan vs. authentic

To clarify the problem, let us take a few moments to compare two sets of images. On the one hand, there are classic deadpan images from Chapter 2, by Bernd and Hilla Becher (Fig. 2.2), Candida Höfer (Fig. 2.3), Frank Breuer (Fig. 2.5) and Thomas Struth (Fig. 2.6). On the other, there are the photographs we will examine in relation to the idea of authenticity: portraits, self-portraits and still life images by Goldin, Tillmans (Fig. 4.2), Kawauchi (Fig. 4.4), Quawson (Fig. 4.5), and McGinley (Fig. 4.6) and Ulman (Fig. 4.7). These two kinds of work circulate in the same markets and institutions but are valued in relation to different sets of priorities. The comparison is somewhat artificial but provides insight into the assumptions adhering to these different strands of contemporary photography.
