twenty-four
Eunice sat on Ericâs front step with slumped shoulders, watching Cinderella chase grasshoppers through the yard. It had already been a couple of hours since he and Dusty left. She had somehow managed to avoid actually getting in the Jeep for this longâsheâd gone back home to change, sheâd eaten a snack, sheâd checked on her gardenâbut she couldnât put it off any longer. It was true what sheâd told Eric. By afternoon sheâd be too spent to trust herself to go anywhere, and it was already eleven oâclock.
She thought sheâd been prepared for this. After Wandaâs twisted version of a pep talk last week, sheâd told herself it was time to face another old friend. But sheâd expected Eric to be with her. Something about having another person along to take her home if something went wrong gave her a little extra courage.
Why had she jumped at the chance to borrow his Jeep and drive herself? She leaned her elbows on her knees and groaned. Because she thought she was stronger than she was.
She could accept defeat, return Ericâs keys when he got home, and ask him if he was available next weekend instead. But what if he was busy again? What if something came up? What if she . . . didnât make it that long?
No. She could do this. She didnât need Eric. And he didnât need to know about all the mistakes sheâd made. Or that her driverâs license had expired.
âOh, Lo-ord.â Her words blended with the hot air and disappeared. âYou wanted Wanda to light a fire under my butt so I wouldnât keep waiting, right? Which means you must be okay with the driverâs license thing, right?â
With a groan, she rose to her feet. No more excuses. She would be careful.
JoJo hung silently and solemnly from her lower abdomen as Eunice trudged to the Jeep and climbed in, reminding Eunice that sheâd need to get back home before the pouch required emptying. Her destination was way out there, near the river, but if the conversation was shortâand she suspected it would beâshe could be back in an hour and a half.
The steering wheel felt strange under her hands. The pedals strange beneath her feet. Even though it had only been a couple of months since sheâd last driven a car, it took a minute for her body to remember what to do. She backed out of the driveway slowly, senses on high alert.
âOkay, God.â She reached up and pulled down the sun visor. âLetâs do this.â
