The writing was by then on the wall for the continued free availability of cocaine and heroin. It had dawned on the majority of the medical profession that the unchecked use of these drugs was not the answer to the people’s minor ailments. That said, it was not until 1920 that possession of opiates became illegal in the UK, and the possession and use of cocaine remained unlegislated in America until 1970.

Meanwhile, by the 1950s the Americans had taken to their hearts another ‘harmless’ drug – amphetamine. Doctors on both sides of the Atlantic scattered these pills like confetti. Apparently they found them very useful to perk up patients in hospital, and everyone was buying Benzedrine inhalers over the counter. Throughout the 1950s, Pan-Am’s in-flight courtesy packs for passengers included a Benzedrine inhaler, which the accompanying pamphlet advised ‘would make the flight more pleasant and seem to pass more quickly’. No kidding!
